Sharon Sides is a designer who has taken the beauty, natural contour and warmth of wood and turned it into an industrial medium using metal and acid.
For her “Stumps” collection, Sides uses digital technology to transfer the ring patterns of different tree species to metal sheets, which are then etched with acid to create a secondary layer of color stains and patina. The sheets are then cut into table tops, or bent to form the seats of chairs. Shaping and bending each chair takes into account the original outlines of the tree stump, consequently bestowing each chair with its own unique character. The result is an evocative portrayal of nature through the lens of technology.
Sharon lives and works in Jerusalem.
