Clate Grunden's lamps concentrate on handmade uniqueness and natural lines, which enables them to mix beautifully with many different design styles. The intentionally unrefined rustic use of glazes and subtle earthy color palette also accentuate the organic aesthetic. All of his work is informed by an appreciation of imperfections and highlights the inherit qualities of the materials. He was originally inspired by mid-century ceramics and recently has incorporated a more post-modern brutalist feel.
Clate began developing and producing his line of custom lighting in 2000, after he observed a need for interesting and unique lighting options for his interior design clients. That need inspired him to redirect his art based ceramic work from purely decorative pieces to ones that also hold intrinsic functional value.
Clate currently lives and produces his handbuilt ceramic lamps in Los Angeles, California.
